It seems everywhere we look these days, whether on a T.V. commercial, magazine ad or a billboard on the freeway, a new diet plan or pill has been developed that will "revolutionize" the current weight loss industry. One such diet is the South Beach Diet. Developed by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston, the South Beach Diet is a non-traditional, low-carb plan which has has sold over 11 million copies to date.
While stressing the benefits of "good" fats and "good" carbohydrates, Dr. Agatston also promises a decrease in the chances of contracting cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Agatston developed the South Beach Diet in the mid-1990's in response to the American Heart Association's recommendation of a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet for the average American. Dr. Agatston believed that the low-fat approach to dieting clearly wasn't working, especially over long periods of time. His South Beach Diet focuses on eliminating the intake of "bad" carbohydrates, or foods with a high glycemic index, which makes it harder for the body to break down fats and sugars. Dr. Agatston also stresses the importance of eliminating saturated and trans fats, which contribute to an increase in cardiovascular disease.
The South Beach Diet works in three phases. The diet begins with Phase One, which last two weeks. During this phase, dieters avoid high-glycemic carbs like sugar, candy, bread, potatoes and cereals. Eliminating these foods will cause the body to start burning excess fat, and during phase one it is estimated that the dieter will lose between eight and thirteen pounds.
Phase One of the South Beach Diet is probably the most difficult to get through for dieters who are used to daily intake of "bad" carbs. Recommended menus during this phase include lean cuts of beef, pork loin, turkey, chicken, veal, and all types of fish. Fat-free cheese, eggs, and nuts are acceptable in moderation. All varieties of vegetables including artichokes, asparagus, beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and spinach are encouraged. Dieters will no doubt be craving something sweet if their bodies are used to sugars, so sugar-free candies, fudge bars, gelatin, and gum are allowed as long as the dieter's intake is less than 75 calories per day.
After completing Phase One, dieters move forward to Phase 2. During this phase the intake of whole grains and fruits are allowed in moderation. Emphasis is continued to be put on "good" carbs, foods that are high in fiber and that take longer to be digested. Phase 2 continues until the dieter's goal weight is achieved. From there the dieter moves on to Phase Three, which allows three servings each of whole grains and fruits per day. If the South Beach Diet is successful, it should bring about a permanent change in the dieter's eating habits.
In 2004, the popularity of the South Beach Diet was growing rapidly, and Kraft Foods picked up the trademark to sell a line of foods that met the requirements of the diet. The Kraft line consists of full menus such as a yogurt parfait for breakfast, cheesy chicken fajitas for lunch, and steak with sun-dried tomato and garlic sauce for dinner. Deviled eggs and frozen mocha smoothie are approved snacks, with hundreds of other options. Other delectable recipes are included on the boxes for added options.
South Beach Diet support is varied. For those dieters that enjoy not having to count calories and protein-rich foods, the South Beach Diet has been a miracle. But for others that need that structured, 1000-calorie-per-day limit, the diet is too lenient and hard to adhere to. In 2005, Kraft Foods conducted a study to measure South Beach Diet support. The study involved of 69 South Beach dieters and found that all had favorable results and completed the program in under three months.
A diet is only as good as the effort one puts into it, and many people with busy lives simply don't have the time or energy to count every last calorie or scour the nutrition labels at the grocery store before purchasing foods. The South Beach Diet gives dieters the freedom to eat many times a day to curb hunger, and implements a new lifestyle that could very possibly change their lives. In the end, a pill is not the answer to fitting into those skinny jeans. Instead the answer to permanent weight loss can be found in eating the right foods, physical endurance, and the will to change.
