South Beach Diet: Guidelines, Meal Plan And Snacks

In a world where clothes are made for the tiniest people, most people are still overweight. Dr. Agaston's South Beach Diet has helped thousands of people change that. Unlike other weight loss fads and plans, the South Beach Diet helps dieters to distinguish between good carbs and good fats and bad carbs and bad fats.

One of the most attractive parts about this diet is that after only two weeks most people following it have lost 8 to 14 pounds. Unlike other current fad diets, it doesn't omit any major food groups, so people can still eat their fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains. The diet teaches good eating habits instead of creating bad ones. "The South Beach Diet" book, written by Dr. Arthur Agaston, goes into more detail about the diet. However, this scientifically-based diet is not a picnic and requires a lot of hard work and determination.

Phase one of the South Beach Diet lasts 14 days, and it is the strictest part of the diet. According to the guidelines, only nuts, vegetables, cheese, eggs, and lean meats are all allowed in the Phase one meal plan, thus eliminating most carbs. Snacks are permitted, but at a limit. The expected weight loss for this phase is 8-13 pounds.

Phase two of the South Beach Diet doesn't last for a specific time, period, but instead goes until the participant has attained his or her weight loss goal. This phase of the diet reinstates whole grain breads and high-fiber carbs, It also allows most fruits, fat-free or 1 percent milk, whole grain starches, low-fat dairy foods, beans, and red wine. Most participants lose 1-2 pounds per week during this phase.

The third and final phase of the South Beach Diet is a continual, life long process, and should become a way of life. As the South Beach Diet supports a balanced meal plan, this isn't hard to do. The perfect lunch could be a chef salad with ham, turkey, cheese, and mixed greens. South Beach diet guidelines also allow for well-balanced snacks such as celery with a wedge of cheese, or a Mocha Ricotta Crème.

"The South Beach Diet" book is an easy-to-follow guide to a healthier lifestyle, starting with a simple meal plan followed by weight loss and a lifestyle change. Dr. Agaston created the diet to help his patients lower their cholesterol and insulin levels, making it ideal for anyone to follow. Even Hollywood has been touched by this phenomenal diet. Jessica Simpson followed it to lose weight for her part in the film "Dukes of Hazard." Hey, if she can do it, anyone can, right? So learn about good carbs and bad carbs, and remove the bad carbs from the diet. Who needs them anyway?
